The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Propecia (finasteride) for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in patients aged 18 to 41.
The approval follows a major new study of hair growth that found more than a third of patients reported experiencing regrowth after six months.
“Propecia’s effectiveness is robust, and our findings provide support for regulatory agencies in issuing new approvals of the medication for use in the treatment of male pattern hair loss,” said Dr. John R. Lea, M. D., director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
In the latest study, published in theJournal of the American Academy of Dermatology, researchers examined more than 2,000 hair-growth-related problems in patients aged 18 to 41. They also compared the effects of the drug on hair growth and found that the drug helped to stimulate hair growth, while taking the medication to stimulate hair growth did not. After six months of treatment, 90% of the patients showed regrowth.
“This is the first time a medication has been approved for the treatment of pattern hair loss, and it is an important step in the development of a new treatment option for patients,” said Dr. Lea.
The new study is the first phase 2 study to evaluate the effectiveness of finasteride and the drug in treating male pattern hair loss.
The drug is marketed under the brand name Proscar and is known for treating the symptoms of male pattern baldness, the most common form of hair loss. It is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, resulting in urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating, weak urine flow and weak stream.

Originally approved to treat male pattern baldness, the new treatment for enlarged prostate was later withdrawn from the market in 1999.
Propecia is still available in a generic form, and it’s being developed to be more affordable.
